Many studies have now confirmed that “Green Bags” (non-woven polypropylene – NWPP) are a better choice for the environment.
The majority of our bags are made from non-woven polypropylene.
Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer – a plastic that can be recycled into a variety of products. Compared to other plastics, polypropylene leaves a smaller imprint on our planet both in the manufacturing process and through its usable life.
A study produced by Zero Waste S.A. confirmed that polypropylene has a much lower greenhouse gas impact and energy use in manufacture than single use plastic and paper bags. They also use significantly less water in production than calico or cotton bags and far less material in production than paper bags.
Each green bag will last an average household about two years, or 104 shops, after which they can be recycled through most major supermarkets.
View the Zero Waste South Australian research study results here (refer to pages 13-15 for summary).
Other Facts about Non-woven Polypropylene:
- Sturdy and repels water
- Most brand logos can be screen printed or heat transferred onto the dyed fabric
- Low cost
- High strength/weight ratio
