There are many studies comparing the environmental footprint of the various reusable bags available and estimates on how many times the bags need to be reused in order to be a better option than single use plastic bags.
“Green Bags” made from non-woven polypropylene (NWPP) are considered a better choice for the environment due to the low amounts of energy and water required to make them and their durability meaning they can be used for many years.
Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer – a plastic that can be recycled into a variety of products. Compared to other plastics, polypropylene leaves a smaller imprint on our planet both in the manufacturing process and through its usable life.
Polypropylene has a much lower greenhouse gas impact and energy use in manufacture than single use plastic and paper bags. They also use significantly less water in production than calico or cotton bags and far less material in production than paper bags.
Each green bag will last an average household about two years, or 104 shops, after which they can be recycled with other soft plastics through most major supermarkets.
Jute or hessian is also another good option as it is very sturdy and uses less water to grow than cotton.
Despite being one of the oldest farmed crops on the planet, Hemp is still relatively under-used however is predicted to increase in coming years. It is fast growing and requires very little if any pesticides.
There is an interesting article from the ABC here which compares some of the bag types available. https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2018-06-20/plastic-bag-ban-options/9874474
